Epsom is a historic market town first recorded as Ebesham in the 10th century, with its name probably deriving from that of a Saxon landowner. It is located on the spring line where the permeable chalk of the North Downs meets the impermeable London Clay. The town became famous in the 17th century when the spring on Epsom Common was found to be rich in Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate), drawing visitors including Charles II and Samuel Pepys. Organised horse racing on Epsom Downs has taken place since the early 17th century, with the Oaks and the Derby established in 1779 and 1780 respectively. For learners, the town centre features a gyratory system and multiple signal-controlled exits that demand confident lane positioning and observation. The A24 London Road is the main artery, a significant road passing through the town. While it primarily consists of a single carriageway, this road plays a crucial role in Epsom’s transportation network. Ewell (KT17, KT19)
Ewell is a suburban area in the borough of Epsom and Ewell, approximately 12 miles south of central London and 2 miles northeast of Epsom. The name derives from the Old English æwell, meaning “river source” or “spring.” Ewell was founded as a spring line settlement, where the permeable chalk of the North Downs meets the impermeable London Clay, and the Hogsmill River still rises at a spring close to Bourne Hall in the village centre. In the 2011 Census, the town had a population of 34,872. For learners, Ewell Village offers a complete driving education: the technical mini-roundabouts require sharp observation and decision-making, the High Street features a largely commercial village centre with reminders of “old” Surrey—weather-boarded cottages with slated or tiled roofs—and the A240 Ewell Bypass provides fast-flowing dual carriageway experience connecting to the A3 at Tolworth. Bronze Age remains have been found in Ewell, and the area was a large settlement on Stane Street, the Roman road from London to Chichester.
Stoneleigh (KT17)
Stoneleigh is a suburban area southwest of London, situated approximately 11 miles from central London in the north of the Epsom and Ewell borough. In the 2011 Census, the population was 8,741. The area was formerly part of the Great Park and Little Park of Nonsuch in the Tudor era. Nonsuch Park today is situated on the site of the Little Park in the east of the suburb, extending into East Ewell and Cheam. The Roman road Stane Street passed through the eastern area of what is now Stoneleigh—the modern-day London Road (A24)—on its way from London to Chichester via the nearby spring at Ewell. The construction of the railway station in 1932 was responsible for initiating the development of much of Stoneleigh, which was largely completed by the onset of World War 2 in late 1939. For learners, Stoneleigh offers wide, tree-lined roads and a calm residential grid that is ideal for early lessons, with the A24 providing quick access to faster roads for progression. The quiet residential streets around Nonsuch Court Avenue are good for turning left, right, and emerging from side roads, and gradients here are suitable for hill exercises.
West Ewell (KT19)
West Ewell is a large residential area with several local centres. Its main centre is the area around Ewell West railway station, which contains a parade of shops. The area achieved the status of a conventional district in July 1936, and full parochial status was granted when All Saints was consecrated as the parish church of West Ewell on 11 October 1952. For learners, West Ewell offers quiet residential streets perfect for manoeuvres and early clutch control, while the short connections to the A240 Ewell Bypass and the A3 mean you can quickly progress to high-speed dual carriageways. The area is part of the wider Ewell residential sprawl that includes Ewell Court, East Ewell, and Ewell Grove, and its proximity to Tolworth test centre makes it a convenient base for test preparation.
Horton (KT19)
Horton is a village in the borough of Epsom and Ewell, situated between Epsom, West Ewell, Chessington, and Malden Rushett. The place-name derives from Old English horu meaning “dirt” and tūn meaning “settlement, farm, estate,” presumably meaning “farm on muddy soil.” Its principal road is Horton Lane, which runs the length of the area between West Ewell and Epsom Common. Horton Country Park also runs along the length of the area, between Epsom Common and West Ewell. The village is historically significant for giving its name to the Horton Light Railway, which served a number of psychiatric hospitals in the area during the 20th century, collectively known as the Epsom Cluster. Since the 1990s, Horton has undergone rapid change as the hospitals closed and multiple housing estates, including Manor Park, were constructed on the site. In 2022, Horton was made a ward in Epsom and Ewell borough due to the population increase. For learners, Horton Lane features approximately six roundabouts between the area and Ruxley Lane in Ewell, providing excellent practice for roundabout discipline. The approach from Rushett Lane, Malden Rushett, offers a stretch of national speed limit—60 mph for a single carriageway for a car without a trailer—soon restricted to 40 and then 30 as the surrounding area becomes more residential.
Longmead (KT19)
Longmead is a mixed residential and industrial area in Epsom, located within the Court ward of the Epsom and Ewell borough. The site was originally part of Epsom Urban District Council’s Sewage Farm before being developed into the Longmead Housing and Industrial Areas. In 1970, the Longmead site became available, and plans were drawn up for a purpose-built garage for Epsom Coaches, which included workshops, a paint shop, offices, and flats on a one-acre site. Today, the area is also home to Blenheim High School on Longmead Road. For learners, Longmead offers a distinctive mix of driving conditions: Hollymoor Lane, off Longmead Road, provides narrow roads with parked cars and a sharp bend by the shops where anticipating oncoming vehicles is essential. Blenheim Road features an ideal roundabout for practising positioning and observation, and the nearby recycling centre and bus station add real-world traffic variety.
